What Is RA - Rheumatoid Arthritis?

Main Entry: rheumatoid arthritis
Function: noun
: a usually chronic disease that is considered an autoimmune disease and is characterized especially by pain, stiffness, inflammation, swelling, and sometimes destruction of joints —abbreviation RA; called also atrophic arthritis;

rheumatoid arthritis. (n.d.). Merriam-Webster's Medical Dictionary. Retrieved January 26, 2008, from Dictionary.com website: http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/rheumatoid arthritis

Now, this is the dictionary definition of what Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) is...but we thought it would be better to ask people suffering from the disease what RA was to them, and this is what we got:

What RA is to me? A very humbling wake up call..... RA made me stop and look around at what I was, or rather wasn't, doing with my life and the people in it. It helped me to slow down and enjoy my family more, enjoy the differences in my life for what they are and not wish them into something else. I had forgotten who the "real me" was. I struggled for a couple of months with the fact that I would have this for the rest of my life. I am only 30 so that seemed like a very long time. I finally came to terms with it and decided that I could fight my life for the rest of my life and be miserable.....or fight the disease and live with it. So, here I am today....living my life, being the person I want to be. Maybe I have to slow down sometimes....maybe some days I want to not have to hurt .... but I have it and I'm not going to let it interpret who I am. - Jessica4

RA is a close personal friend---too close. lol That was a goofy answer. I am not one to whine or complain very often.  RA is and has been a complete 180 in my life, but I see it as part of God's plan for my life and a new challenge.  I stay happy and just take each day with a smile. - Bob
